Selectmen postpone May 1, 2 elections and meeting
Boothbay Harbor selectmen on April 13 postponed the May 1 secret ballot elections and May 2 annual town meeting out of caution for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Town Manager Julia Latter said the board would choose a later date when the time is appropriate. The board also accepted several resignations, one new appointment and delegation of duties to keep business rolling during the pandemic.
Regional Emergency Management Director Scott Campbell has tendered his resignation after months of consideration, said Chair Mike Tomko. “Scott’s been EMA director for a number of years for us. We’d just like to thank him for all the work and service he’s put in.”
Selectmen voted to accept Campbell’s resignation and then to elevate Regional Emergency Management Assistant Director Mike Ciccarelli to director until all board appointments are up in late June.
Latter said she has also accepted resignations from Maureen Smith, who has been Boothbay Harbor Police Department administrator for 18 years, and from Larry Omland, who has served as assistant clerk and front desk support for 10 years. Smith and Omland were thanked for their many years of service.
Selectmen granted Town Clerk Michelle Farnham authority to sign license renewals until Maine’s state of emergency ends. Said Latter, “This is to allow us to continue approving licenses as they come in. It’s more for the ability to be able to sign them and get them to applicants and keep business moving.”
After an executive session, selectmen gave Latter a pay raise in accordance with her contract after her six-month review. Selectman Denise Griffin said the decision was “based upon a very excellent six months’ performance.”
Selectmen granted liquor license renewals to Kaler’s Crab and Lobster House, Spruce Point Inn, Brown’s Wharf Inn, and Blue Moon Cafe; a new liquor license to Cap’n Fish’s Boat Trips; and special amusement license renewals to Spruce Point Inn, Tugboat Inn and Brown Brothers Inc.
Latter announced the town office, open daily for calls and emails during normal business hours, will be closed Monday, April 20 for Patriot’s Day.
