Selectmen concerned about country club entrance width
Boothbay selectmen are wondering if the newly painted dimensions leading into the country club’s entrance are a “little tight.” The privately funded project began Sept. 30. The Maine Department of Transportation created a second lane on Route 27 for traffic entering the new Boothbay Harbor Country Club’s entrance.
During the Oct. 14 board meeting, selectmen discussed whether the two lanes provide enough space for large vehicles.
“The painted lines seem a little tight out there. I wonder if a rescue vehicle or a trailer truck could pass through. It appears more clustered together than before,” said Selectman Chuck Cunningham.
The selectmen also wanted sign-age available warning motorists of the change in traffic patterns. The board directed Town Manager Dan Bryer to contact the Maine Department of Transportation regarding the traffic lane’s width and to request warning signs.
“Our concern is as the traffic lanes become narrower, it’s confusing for motorists,” Bryer said. “We’re hoping a sign warning about the changing traffic pattern will help.
The MDOT provided the Boothbay Harbor Country Club a traffic permit for the work done on the new entrance, according to Deputy Commissioner Jonathan Nass. The department approved the permit and the property’s owner hired a road crew to create a second lane for entering the country club.
The MDOT traffic engineer inspected the finished work on Oct. 22.
“The project was approved by the department. The work was done by the owner. A department engineer inspected the project today (Thursday) to ensure the work met the plan’s specifications,” Nass said.
The selectmen are also concerned about a potential sinkhole on another state-owned road. A sinkhole may be developing near Martin Page’s property on Route 96. The MDOT has a light capital paving project scheduled for Route 96 in 2016. According to DOT business and community outreach professional Jennifer Smith, the agency will inspect the road’s condition pertaining to a sinkhole at that time.
“We’ve been in contact with town officials about their concern,” Smith said. “We’re making sure the lines of communication are open. And we’ve given the names of people to contact about the future project.”
In other action, the selectmen authorized the deed and closing documents related to sale of two lots. The properties were sold to PGC 5, LLC, of Boothbay. One property is a half acre and located at 1033 Wiscasset Road. The second is .53 acres and located off Corey Lane, according to town officials. PGC 5, LLC, purchased the two properties last month for $275,000.
The selectmen also authorized Bryer to sign any future documents regarding the real estate transaction on the town’s behalf.
The selectmen will meet next at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the municipal building.
