The Boothbay Region High School indoor track team met with mixed success Jan. 10 at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham. With a range of placements, the Seahawks won three events, broke two program records and saw two athletes qualify for state championships.  

According to coach Nick Scott, Karen Higgins broke a 20-year-old record for the 400m dash, qualifying her for the state championships. The girls' 4x200-meter relay team, Moriah Smith, Sophia Mansfield, Abbie Clark and Rose Campbell, also broke a school record set last year. In addition, Smith qualified for states with her 55-meter dash finish.  

Varsity boys results were as follows: Chase Mansfield, Neal Baldwin and Logan Bourne placed 23rd, 24th and 25th in the 55m dash in 8.51, 9.09 and 9.98; Chase Mansfield and Baldwin placed 19th and 20th in the 200m dash in 31.32 and 34.02; Cleyton Splaine, Ross Gaffney and Nathan Percival placed 11th, 16th and 21st in the one-mile run in 5:45.10, 6:05.08 and 6:22.33; AJ Crocker, Splaine and Gaffney placed first, eighth and 10th in the two-mile run in 10:52.63; 12:25.77 and 13:54.30; the relay team won the 4x800 relay in 10:53.54 and placed fifth in the 4x200 relay in 1:54.15; and Bourne, Baldwin and Mansfield placed sixth, eighth and 10th in shot put with 31-08.5, 29-09.25 and 27-07.25.  

For the girls: Campbell and Kora McKenney placed third and 15th in the 55m dash in 7.98 and 9.92; Campbell, Clark and McKenney placed third, 10th and 15th in the 200m dash in 28.76, 32.30 and 39.38; Zuri Smith and Lexi Hughes placed fifth and 14th in the 800m run in 2:51.81 and 3:17.11; Higgins won the two-mile run in 11:33.73; the relay team placed fourth in the 4x200m relay in 2:03.12; Moriah Smith placed 10th in the long jump with 12-02.25; and Campbell placed 10th in shot put with 20-07.75.  

The team’s next scheduled meet is Jan. 17. In addition, Campbell, Higgins, Moriah Smith, Crocker and Wiscasset’s Ben Gapski qualified to compete in the Fleet Feet Maine Elite indoor invitational Jan 20. Both meets are in Gorham at USM.
