Seahawks stumble with losses Friday, Saturday

The Boothbay Region High School baseball team had two home-game losses this week, leaving the team with a 0-4 record. The Seahawks lost 10-6 against Spruce Mountain May 5 and 12-0 in a mercy shutout against Monmouth May 6.

Friday’s game was at Wiscasset Middle High School due to poor field conditions at BRHS. Dylan Plummer gave the Seahawks an early lead against Spruce Mountain with a run in the first inning. The good fortune lasted until the third inning when the Phoenix responded with three runs of their own and another in the fourth.

The teams were tied 4-4 by the fourth inning as Finn Harkins, Sam Markowitz and Luke Morley each scored for Boothbay.

"I think everyone offensively was swinging the bat better," said BRHS Coach Ed Crocker. "I have talked to them a lot about being more aggressive and I felt they were more aggressive at the plate."

Morley and Liam Jacobs each took a run in the sixth inning. However, their efforts were not enough to slow the Phoenix, who took a decisive lead with four of their own. The away team sealed its win with another two runs in the seventh inning.

“I think they go and make some good plays then they kind of get relaxed," said Crocker. "Once they make that first mistake, they get in their own heads and it compounds and compounds."

Harkins, Jacobs and Henry Putnam took the mound for the Seahawks. It was Putnam’s first game pitching and Crocker gave him credit for keeping the game close.

Crocker said he was happy with his team’s improvement from the last few seasons despite the loss. He said he enjoyed watching the team members play because they work hard and hold themselves accountable.

"We’ve had three games now and we’ve been in every one of them,” he said. “Up to this point last year and before, we’ve already been mercied two or three times. We're not at that point yet."

That point may have come on Saturday when the Seahawks faced off against Monmouth in a six-inning shutout at BRHS. The Mustangs scored one run in the first inning, four in the second, three each in the third and fourth, and one in the sixth.

Gryffin Kristan, Aidric Canada and Jacobs pitched for the Seahawks.
