The Boothbay Harbor varsity baseball team made progress over the past week with a solid win against Winslow May 3 and a close victory over Telstar May 6. The Seahawks are now 4-3 for the season and ranked seventh of 10 in the Class D South Heal point standings.

May 6, Boothbay Harbor took a narrow 1-0 win against Telstar at home.

Pitcher Finn Harkins had the Seahawks’ play of the game with a diving catch for the third out of the final inning. Harkins said he felt good and wanted to make the last out. “We had two outs for a couple batters and, you know, I wanted to end the game. Figured I'd lay out for it,” he said.

Seahawk Casey Phelps scored the game’s sole run. Phelps, Harkins, Sam Markowitz and Shawn Gamage each had a hit. The Rebels had four.

Harkins pitched the whole game, throwing 11 strikeouts and allowing two walks and no earned runs. Boothbay struck out seven times, earned one run and had no walks. The Seahawks had one error.

Coach Ed Crocker complimented Harkins’ pitching and said his changes kept Telstar off balance. At bat, he said his team faced the Rebels’ number one pitcher and held their own. He added, the communication between shortstop and third baseman was excellent, the kind of defense communication that wins games.

“I didn't feel like I had to do much coaching. They pretty much took care of it on their own,” Crocker said. “I think the combination of good pitching and lack of errors is going to win us a lot of games. And that's what we've been telling them all year.”

May 3, the Seahawks soared past the Black Raiders, 15-1 at Winslow.

Boothbay scored eight runs in the first inning, three in the second and four in the fourth. Winslow scored once in the third. The game ended after the fifth inning.

“They came out swinging, and they hit the ball hard. Everyone did,” Crocker said, adding that his team had several line drive hits.

Maddox Cusumano led scoring for Boothbay Harbor with three runs. Harkins, Markowitz, Phelps, Liam Jacobs and Henry Putnam scored two each. Gamage and Dominick Dow each scored one. Markowitz, Cusumano and Jacobs each had two hits and Harkins, Aidric Canada, Putnam and Gamage each had one.

Jacobs pitched 10 strikeouts for the Seahawks and Canada pitched one. Combined, they allowed no earned runs or walks. Boothbay took six walks and eight earned runs.

Both teams had three errors.

May 1, after falling behind in the fifth inning, the Seahawks couldn’t keep up with Mt. Abram. The Roadrunners won 6-1.

Each team made one run in the first inning followed by three innings without scoring. Markowitz made the Seahawks’ sole run, earned. Mt. Abram then took a three-point lead in the fifth inning and cemented the win in the seventh with two more.

“This is where we’ve been. We stay with them, stay with them and, all of a sudden, we have a bad inning,” Crocker said. “They didn't beat us. We beat ourselves.”

Jacobs led Boothbay’s efforts at bat with three hits while Cusumano and Markowitz each had one. Mt. Abrams had six hits overall.

Harkins and Canada pitched for the Seahawks and, combined, threw seven strikeouts. They allowed two earned runs and four walks. Boothbay had four strikeouts, one walk and three errors.

Despite the loss, Crocker said his team’s pitching has been outstanding and the players are putting the bat on the ball against curve balls, knuckle balls and fastballs. However, he said one bad inning can take a toll on his pitchers. “I really think this team can beat anyone as soon as we start minimizing the errors,” he said.
