Seahawks continue to race past track records
The Boothbay Region High School indoor track team continued its success at the team's second meet of the season Saturday, Jan. 4. The team took some top-ten placements in both girls and boys events and broke several school records. Over 40 teams participated in the meet at Gorham.
Three athletes set five combined program records, according to coach Nick Scott. He said Rose Campbell broke records in the 55m and 200m dash and Karen Higgins broke two of her own school records in the one and two-mile run. Scott added that Higgins' two-mile time also broke the meet record and is the third fastest in the state. The four performances earned automatic qualifications for state championships.
Scott said Ben Gapski from Wiscasset broke the program triple jump record he set at the Dec. 20 meet. Gapski also qualified provisionally for states in the 55m hurdle event, and AJ Crocker provisionally qualified for the two-mile run.
Results for the girls were: Campbell placed 12th in the 55m dash in 7.90; Campbell, Sophia Mansfield and Abbie Clark placed seventh, 85th and 90th in the 200m dash in 28.33, 32.63 and 32.75; Clark placed 37th in the 400m dash in 1:16.59; Maddie Orchard placed 29th in the 800m run in 2:53.86; Higgins placed fifth in the one-mile run in 5:23.60; Higgins placed second in the two-mile run in 11:29.59; and the sprint medley relay team placed ninth in 4:57.32.
For the boys, Cleyton Splaine took 54th place in the one-mile run in 5:42.51; Crocker placed 13th in the two-mile run in 10:56.77; Gapski placed sixth in the triple jump with 37-2.75; and the 4x800m relay team placed 10th in 10:48.62.
