Seahawks hope experience leads to victories
Not a lot has changed with the Boothbay Region High School girls varsity basketball program, but coach Bruce Orne is hoping the blending of experience with young talent will result in some success this coming season.
Orne, beginning his fourth year as head coach, returns seven players and welcomes four freshmen. One of those freshmen, Eleanor Erwin, who helped lead the Boothbay Region Elementary School Wildcats to a Busline League championship last season, is currently sidelined with a leg injury.
Returning are senior forwards Anna Gosselin, Maddie Orchard and Ivory Cody and point guard Bella Orr, who led the team in scoring last season. Orne also has three juniors returning, center Tatum French, the team’s leading rebounder in 2023-2024, and guards Sophie White and Abbie Orchard.
Besides Erwin, first-time Seahawks include Lily Brown, Arabella Hodgdon and Adeline Barter.
The Seahawks finished last season at 5-13 with wins over Traip, Lisbon, Oak Hill, Telstar and Kents Hill.
“We had a good summer program, getting some good competition during our Lobster Jam tournament,” said Orne. “These freshmen want to compete so it will help this season.”
The 2024-2025 schedule will include two teams the Seahawks haven’t faced in a couple of years, North Yarmouth Academy and St. Dom’s. Orne said there are also several new coaches in Class C South at Dirigo, Traip and Monmouth.
Assisting Orne again on the bench are coaches Jesse Peters and Laura Murphy.
The Seahawks kick off the regular season at home on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. against a tough Class B team, Spruce Mountain, which finished 16-2 last season.
