Sarah’s Scoops is open!

Sarah’s Scoops, an ice cream stand in Boothbay Harbor, opened for the season on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. Despite the cold temperatures and the huge pile of snow out front, owner Sarah Gudroe decided to open the stand, which features Gifford’s Ice Cream, on the same day most Gifford’s stands in Maine open.
On opening day, Gudroe’s son, Elijah Gudroe, said business had been a little slow. People were driving by not noticing the ‘Open’ sign, probably because it’s unexpected on a chilly March day.
A woman from Ellington, Connecticut stopped for a cone. She was here visiting her new granddaughter in Damariscotta, Penny Klimkiewicz, born during the blizzard on March 14. The customer agreed to have a picture taken. She told the Boothbay Register, “I haven’t eaten sugar in months and months, and so I’m totally busted.”
Right now there are 15 flavors of ice cream to choose from, both hard and soft serve, frozen yogurt, sorbet and sherbet, and even dairy-free treats and gluten-free cones. And there’s a menu full of all the yummy ice cream delights you can think of: Frappes, floats, freezes and sundaes.
During March, the stand will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 5:30 p.m.; and Fridays through Sundays from 12:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Gudroe’s Facebook page says: “I reserve the right to not open on terribly cold and stormy days! Once Memorial Day comes I will be open rain or shine!”
