Rug-hooking for a cause

The Southport Rug Hookers held a fiber arts exhibit at the Boothbay Region YMCA on Thursday. The proceeds go to the Boothbay Region Community Resource Council toward the Woodchucks program, which helps folks in need of firewood during the winter months.
“We’re the Southport Rug Hookers and we’ve been meeting for a number of years,” said Patty Colhoun motioning to a handful of other group members.
Having gotten together after a fundraiser for the Southport Library a few years ago, the ladies meet once a week to hook, weave and stitch.
“This year, we decided to expand,” said Colhoun. “Last year we did a fundraiser for the Music Memory Program up at St. Andrews Village, so (this year) I put out notices to try and get people from all over the peninsula because there is such talent. We now have four non-Southport rug-hookers who submitted pieces.”
“The predominance of the pieces, here, are hooked rugs and mats, but there is just such a variety (of pieces), such a diversity in materials,” Calhoun said quickly pointing out cotton, wool and silk as examples.
Among the dozens of pieces on display were rugs, rug hooking pieces, weavings, needlepoint pieces, cross-stitch pieces, needle feltings and quilts. Some of the art appeared in interesting shapes and designs while other pieces focus on finely detailed landscape scenes and portraits.
After walking around and introducing the different artists’ pieces, Calhoun said, “We’re just a group of women who like to hook and have a good time together.”
