The Rt. Reverend Mark Beckwith at All Saints July 7 and 14
All Saints by-the-Sea is pleased to announce the return of the recently retired Bishop of Newark, New Jersey, the Rt. Reverend Mark Beckwith, who will preside over the services of Holy Communion on Sunday July 7 and 14. Services are at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Bishop Beckwith is a favorite of the All Saints Community who brings a tireless commitment to tackling social issues as well as a depth of preaching experience to his ministry.
Elected the 10th Bishop of Newark, N.J. in September 2006, Beckwith retired in September 2018. Prior to his election, he was rector at All Saints Church, Worcester, Massachusetts. He also served as associate rector of St. Peter’s, Morristown, N.J. and rector of Christ Church, Hackensack, N.J. He is a 1973 graduate of Amherst College and a 1978 graduate of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale.
Throughout his career, Beckwith has been involved in finding solutions to social problems. He co-founded Morris Shelter, Inc and was the first president of the Inter-Religious fellowship of the Homeless in Bergen County. He is currently involved in an organization, Better Angels, that is committed to creating civil and depolarized discourse. His philosophy of community involvement is expressed in his blog where he writes, “God created us, but God was not — and is not — finished creating. God keeps showing up. God is very much at work. Our job as God’s creatures…is to join with God in God’s work.”
Refreshments will be served after the 10 a.m. services both Sundays. On Tuesday July 9 and 16, Bishop Beckwith will lead a discussion group on the chapel’s front porch from 9 to 10 a.m.
All Saints-by-the-Sea is on Southport Island on All Saints Road about 2 miles on the left driving south on Route 238. An Episcopal Church sign is visible by the side of the road on Route 238. Parking is available along Route 238 with limited handicapped spaces off All Saints Road. A golf cart will ferry persons from the handicapped lot to the church steps. You may also come to church by private boat or by the tour boat Novelty, which leaves Boothbay Harbor from Pier 8 at 9 a.m., tides permitting. Novelty picks up passengers from the church dock at 11:40 a.m. for return to Pier 8. The very beautiful and simple wood chapel is open for quiet prayer and meditation during the week.
