Rotary hosts annual Kentucky Derby party

The Rotary Club of Boothbay Harbor was the scene of a fun and energetic Kentucky Derby Party on Saturday, May 4 that saw the men in snappy Derby attire and women in flowery and fun Derby hats!

This annual event is sponsored with and benefits The Community Center. The festive atmosphere was helped by authentic mint juleps, Southern traditional Derby food, including Kentucky ham and biscuits, deviled eggs, steamed asparagus and more,  topped off by delicious Kentucky Derby pies, all made by volunteers.

“Married with Chitlins” provided music throughout the evening. A silent auction of donated treasures and gifts from local friends and businesses added an additional bit of competition.

The muddy track and muddled finish notwithstanding, the winner of the friendly betting was Christine Wolfe of Dresden. Brenda Blackman from Boothbay won the best hat contest.

Derby Day 2019 was again a successful joint fundraiser and a happy collaboration between the Community Center and the Rotary Club. Volunteers from both organizations made it happen, with special thanks to Margi Spratt, Shawn Lewin, and Margaret Perritt for their leadership.  A good time was had by all!
