River Arts in Damariscotta is pleased to present a unique show by four artists, in four mediums. Connected by their reflective approaches, these artists delve deeply into personally relevant subjects. This River Room show runs from Jan. 5 through Feb. 1. The Artists’ Reception will be Saturday, Jan. 21 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Holly Anderson Baumm speaks about her work, “I have selected mixed-media artworks that integrate symbolism, technique and imagination into familiar forms. I believe that artworks share like a story; they tell us something and ask questions too. My wish is that the viewer will enjoy having multiple ways to think, reflect and question as they spend time with these artworks.”

In Alice de Mauriac’s abstract paintings, her focus on process is vital to the works. Numerous layers of paint, applied and removed and reapplied, build upon each other. Her lyrical color, vigorous paint handling and sgraffito create an ambience of immediacy and personal memoir. The impression of lost and found, emerging and becoming, poignantly resolves with a sense of longing and hope.

Laurel Dodge is a nature photographer who delights in the details. She reveals the natural world through an up-close-and-personal lens, often pushing the real into the edge of abstraction. In this show, she brings the geology of Maine's coast into sharp focus, revealing how millennia of geological processes have created art of their own through stone.

Judy Nixon describes the inspiration for her paintings: “I love to paint scenes from my area of Maine, whether it’s a landscape, seascape, or the creatures on the Pemaquid peninsula. I also get excited to capture the wonderful island atmosphere of Monhegan whenever I have the opportunity to visit. My artistic approach is anchored in my personal connection to the subject, with light and color playing an important part in the design.”
