Recap of fall High School Sailing season
The High School Sailing Program, organized by the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, had a good fall season! We had 13 sailors. Most of them were returning from previous years but we did have three new additions to the team. The participants practiced three days a week throughout September and October, largely focusing on fleet racing.
With fewer sailors this season and some scheduling challenges, students from Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, East Boothbay, Bremen, Bristol, Damariscotta, Edgecomb and Trevettcompeted as a conglomerate team for some of the local Penobscot Bay Sailing League Regattas, while Lincoln Academy was able to travel and compete in several larger Interscholastic Sailing Association Regattas. Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club also hosted two of the Penobscot Bay Sailing League Regattas, which went well, and all other attending teams seemed to really enjoy.
Lincoln Academy traveled to Portland, Martha’s Vineyard, and Newport, where they faced fierce competition in each of those fleets. They were able to earn some 1stand 2ndplace finishes, but not enough to qualify for the Atlantic Coast Championships as they have in recent years.
Some of our graduating seniors also competed in a few other exciting events. Otto Schoenthal competed for the Healy Trophy in the NESSA singlehanded championship at American YC in New York. Lila Hall and Hannah Hills each skippered in the Becton Cup at Maine Maritime Academy which is theMaine Girls Doublehanded Championship.
Overall, it was a fun season for all of our sailors, and we are looking forward to switching gears to team racing in the spring!
The sailing program is part of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Junior Program and is offered to all local youth at the High School and Junior High School levels. As with all Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club youth programs, families do not have to be members of the Club to participate. Financial aid is available for those who qualify through the BHYC Junior Program Foundation. For more information about the programs, you can go to https://www.bhyc.net/junior-programs.
