Re: History of the Opera House
Dear Editor:
In the Oct. 5 issue of the Register is a great article about our local Opera House by Lisa Kristoff. I always enjoy her articles and her enthusiasm for the arts. She knows her medium well.
A little further interesting story about the Opera House that most people do not know: When John Abbe, owner of the Opera House, threatened to tear the building down (due to various reasons) to make room for a parking lot – at this point my personal love for old structures and their history made a need for my outcry for the demise of an important community building. Certainly it could become another purpose that would last many generations (which it finally did become – a fabulous Opera House with year-round entertainment).
I took it upon myself to arrange an important meeting with the town fathers, John Abbe, Earle Shuttleworth (then the head of Maine Historic Preservation) and myself. The problem was almost instantly resolved with all concerned. Everyone knew how important the building’s history was and a possible community use for the imposing structure. The future of a public entertainment center or a “hub of culture” was born that day at the meeting.
Sometimes a little effort goes a long way. After our meeting, it was decided there would be no tear-down. Later on, there became a “Save the Opera House” committee, which was spearheaded by locals. Proudly I served on the same for awhile. Donations came pouring in and rest is history. Preservation is progress … indeed!
