Question regarding another school repair bond
As we prepare for bringing another school repair bond for your consideration – I’ve already received
the same question from several people.
Q: Why are we being asked to approve yet another bond for school repairs – which includes some
items already approved by voters last April?
A: We will miss the summer construction window due to pending litigation. (estimated cost due
to inflation between 2.5 and 3 million dollars)
Brief History of how we arrived here:
• While continuing to direct normal operations, the Board of Trustees spent an incredible
amount of additional time over the course of years (hundreds of hours) discussing,
researching, listening, and ultimately deciding upon a course of action – approved by voters
in April.
• The cost of doing these partial repairs unsystematically is more expensive in terms of dollars
and time, than doing them as part of the previously approved project. The longer the repairs
are stretched out, the more expensive they will become, and the more learning will be
impacted due to needing to phase the repairs differently than planned for the project. For
an example of those costs, those disruptions to learning, one only has to look back at
impacts of our flood at BRES.
• The amount of life safety, end of system life, and other critical repairs is not shrinking. The
opposite is true. This has been well documented in two separate existing conditions reports
as well as at Trustee meetings. All of this information is available on our website or you may
contact my office if you have any specific questions.
Our students, staff, and community partners are doing amazing things with the resources they have
at their disposal. You will be hearing more about what is happening in our schools soon. You have
much to be proud of.
We appreciate your continued support of our students.
