Public safety no longer an issue at Hendricks Head Beach
The parking lot at Hendricks Head Beach is finally in place, and on Thursday, July 24, there were a lot of people parked there and enjoying the beach. According to Southport Selectman Gerry Gamage, there are approximately 16 new parking spaces.
The beach and adjoining land were purchased for $1.25 million by the town of Southport from the Ruth Gardner estate. Gardner, who owned the largest section of the beach, had allowed the public to use it, and most residents wanted to keep it public.
Gamage said that vehicles parking and driving by the beach had been a big problem in the past. The plan was to make some additional parking and put up signage to enforce parking rules.
“Our main goal was to relieve the traffic situation, and it seems to be working out,” Gamage said. “There are no public safety issues now.”
July 24 was a picture-perfect beach day, and people and their dogs were taking full advantage.
