Preseason soccer fast on its way

New coach Matt Brewer shares insight

Boothbay Region High School math teacher Matt Brewer is the new girls soccer coach and could not be more excited to start the season. Brewer also said he is not quite sure yet what his expectations are for the season since preseason has yet to start.

“I suppose my main goals are to try to make the playoffs and to keep the program going,” said Brewer. He will rely on the seniors to be leaders. “I will also rely heavily on a wealth of ninth grade newcomers to see a lot of time on the field.”

Senior Reagan Cola was a conference all star last season and the leading scorer for the team, Brewer pointed out. He said with the likes of Olivia Paolillo and Reagan Cola, Kaitlyn Dube who came to BRHS from Thornton Academy, and other returning players – Aly Nein, Kelsey Poore and Isabel Harkins – leadership and skill will not be a worry.

Brewer was a goalie for Wiscasset High School in the early 2000s playing on some of its most successful teams. Drawing on his experience and training, he would like to push Seahawks soccer to learn and find the same type of success, he said.

“I played for a legendary coach, Bob Sommers, and will borrow largely from many of his skills, drills, and strategies. That’s easier said than done!”

Opening week of the preseason runs Tuesday Aug. 14 to Saturday, Aug. 18 from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at Clifford Park.
