Preparing a Thanksgiving feast

The 54 students in the kindergarten and first grade classes at Boothbay Region Elementary School had a busy start to Thanksgiving week. On Monday, Nov. 21 — also Pajama Day — the students were making, rolling and filling pie crust and cutting veggies.
Plans called for the children to sit down to a Thanksgiving feast on Tuesday, Nov. 22 outside their classrooms at tables set up banquet-style, the length of the hallways!
Turkeys and a few other dishes were prepared over the weekend by kindergarten teachers Mrs. Spaulding and Mrs. Mellor and first grade teachers Lisa Andrews and Sarah Wade. All of the students and their families were asked to contribute something. For example, one student may have been assigned two potatoes and a green pepper while another may have been assigned a stick of butter and two apples. All the kids had to have their items in by last Friday, Nov. 18. Any last minute items would be purchased by the teachers.
“We’ve done the feast off and on over the years,” Spaulding said. “But we always do something special for this holiday.”
The meal is what you’d call a real “hands on” approach to the children’s understanding of the first Thanksgiving and what’s involved in preparing their individual family celebrations!
