Pinkham, Thompsons honored for lifetimes of service
On Saturday, July 3, the Boothbay Region Water District Board of Trustees honored Harry Pinkham and John, Howard and Stuart Thompson for lifetimes of service in a thoroughly water district way.
In Boothbay Harbor, the former Mt. Pisgah standpipe that stands at the end of Summit Road was officially renamed the Harry L. Pinkham Standpipe. The 550,000-gallon Pinkham standpipe was built in 1997 and replaced the original standpipe in this location built in 1897.
On behalf of the board, Gerry Gamage dedicated the Pinkham standpipe and the new plaque outside its gate.
“This standpipe is an integral part of the Boothbay Region Water District and another integral part of the Boothbay Region Water District is Harry Pinkham. Harry became a trustee in 1954 and is presently serving his 54th year as trustee and chairman. Over the years, he has overseen many projects, repairs and upgrades. He has lived his life in the shadow, literally, of this standpipe.”
“It is with great pleasure, on behalf of the Boothbay Region Water District, heretofore to proclaim this the Harry L. Pinkham standpipe. And it gives me greater pleasure to do this while you are alive and well.”
In a second ceremony on Southport Island, the board dedicated the district’s newest standpipe to the Thompson family. The 511,000-gallon Thompson standpipe is the fourth standpipe constructed on this site.
“The Southport Water System was started by John Thompson. His son, Howard Thompson became the first superintendent of the water system and ran it until he passed away in 1950. Then Stuart, his son, became the superintendent and he ran it from then on. This has been a lifelong thing for the Thompson family,” Gamage said in his dedication remarks.
“It gives me great pleasure, having worked with Stuart and having been a superintendent and commissioner of the Southport Water System to dedicate this to John, Howard and Stuart Thompson, who collectively gave a lifetime of service to the Southport Water System,” Gamage said.
Jean Thompson cut the red ribbon on behalf of the Thompson family.
