Personal attacks
The funding of the new school/renovation project is not a right/wrong or black/white issue. It should be entered in thoughtfully and circumspectly. One response from those who support the funding has been particularly unfair and disheartening. When encountering questions or opposition, these individuals make the accusation that these people " just don’t care about children.”
I wonder if they take this approach in order to leverage their viewpoint by demeaning the character of other folks who do not agree with them. Consideration of funding that will likely result in huge increases in taxes on the residents of Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor (and the potential hardships it may bring to many) deserves careful analysis and investigation of all options (for instance, one factor of which I have heard little is the possibility of partitioning large classrooms in half, since class sizes are becoming much smaller, therefore doubling available rooms). I know for a fact that some individuals who have been on the receiving end of this “you don’t care accusation" have demonstrated a great deal of support and care for children, and have invested many years and resources in our young people.
Regardless of one’s position on this issue, there is no place for this kind of personal attack. It is divisive and could easily destroy friendships and unity in our communities. Citizens have the right to hold and express their position on either side of this issue without their character being falsely disparaged.
