Pemaquid Chapter, DAR celebrates 92 Years
On Thursday, Nov. 14, several chapter members and guests descended on the Boothbay Harbor Historical Society museum to celebrate the Chapter turning 92 years old on Nov. 26. The Historical Society building is the former home of Founding Chapter member Elizabeth Reed.
Attendees: Honored Guests: State Regent Elizabeth Calhoun, Vice President General and Colorado Honorary State Regent Bethe Clark-Urban, Lady Knox Chapter Regent Joanne Richards, Past Chapter Regent and Lady Knox member Mary Kay Felton, and Great-Grand Niece of Elizabeth Reed, Judy Hurford. Member attendees: Chapter Regent Barbara Belknap, Vice Regent/Treasurer Audrey Miller, Nancy Chick, Sue Hochstein, Diane Randlett, and Valerie Trentin.
The meeting was called to order by Chapter Regent Barbara Belknap at 11:30 a.m. Prayers were offered and the DAR Ritual was performed. Audrey Miller read the President General’s message honoring Veterans Day on Nov. 11 reminding us that Veterans Day is our chance to honor American Veterans of all wars. Committee reports were given as follows: This holiday season gift cards are preferred for women veterans living at the Sister in Arms Home in Hallowell. Richard Tinsman of the Maine Troop Greeters and Museum at Bangor Airport was the guest speaker at the Fall State DAR Meeting. Since 2003 they have greeted over 1.5 million service members and over 400 military dogs returning from service overseas.
Pemaquid Chapter is a sponsor of the Wreaths Across America campaign annually to sponsor wreaths for Veterans at Arlington Cemetery in Washington, D.C. This year WAA will have its annual ceremony on Dec. 14 in Augusta. On Nov. 15, Chapter members and committee chair, Linda Wood, will be offering WAA participation opportunities at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens at their annual Community Night.
A delightful lunch was enjoyed by all. Diane Randlett gave a talk on the life of Elizabeth Reed. The Historical Society’s current spotlight is on the Reed Family and their role in Boothbay’s history. The meeting was adjourned at 2 p.m. when the Historical Society closed for the day.
The DAR is a non-profit, non-political women’s service organization founded in 1890 to support its mission of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The Pemaquid Chapter serves the communities in Lincoln County.
Any woman who can prove lineage to someone who fought in the American Revolution is eligible to join.
