St. Andrews Village resident Paul Adams, 97, received the Boston Post Cane award July 22 from the town of Boothbay Harbor. Selectboard Chair Mike Tomko was joined by Town Manager Julia Latter and Town Clerk Michelle Farnham to present the 113-year-old award to Adams.

“We celebrate your time here, we welcome you, we're glad you're here and we'd really like to honor you,” said Tomko. “On behalf of the Boston Post as well as the town of Boothbay Harbor, we say congratulations.”

Adams was born in March 1925 and grew up in East Boothbay. He attended East Boothbay High School, Coburn Classical Institute in Waterville, Colby College and, in 1943, joined the U.S. Navy as a submariner. Adams settled in California after the war staying in the reserves while working for a degree in forestry from University of California. He worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 17 years and ran an insurance business for 23 years with his late wife, Becky, before moving back to Southport in 1983. He has been a resident of St. Andrews Village for the past six years.

Giving the cane a twirl before relinquishing it back to the town for safe-keeping, Adams thanked his friends and neighbors and all his relatives present at the ceremony. “Thank you all for coming. I'm really happy to have this (award).”
