Painting, planning, and thanks to Public Works
The Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor Community School District Trustees discussed colors to paint the new tennis courts, work to possibly be done on the school/Y crosswalk, and recent groundwork at their regular meeting on Wednesday, May 7.
Maintenance Supervisor Dave Benner said he had spoken with Maine Tennis & Track about painting the new courts.
“They stated we are first on the list, and they will complete the job ASAP, as the weather allows. The only guarantee I received is that it would be completed, and ready to go by July 4,” Benner stated in his report. The back concrete wall will be painted as soon as the BRHS tennis season is over.
The new courts will most likely be painted blue and green. Superintendent Eileen King said she had spoken to many members of the tennis community, who had no problem with the courts being closed for a couple weeks for the painting to be done.
Recently reelected trustee Richard Hallinan brought up an issue that had been brought to his attention by a local resident. The crosswalk between the school and the Boothbay Region Y was not very eye-catching, and since it is heavily used by students, there was some concern about danger, as a crossing guard is not always present.
The other trustees agreed, and discussed if anything could be done about it. Some suggested creating a blinking light, which perhaps would be set off via a motion detector when a child walked past it towards the crosswalk.
Boothbay Region High School Principal Daniel Welch mentioned that a great many students use the crosswalk around 5 and 6 p.m.; and in the winter it is dark by then, which increases the danger.
It was also suggested that the trustees work with the Y on improvements.
“We need enhanced visibility there, no question,” King said. “We should take time this summer to improve it.”
The trustees agreed to talk about the issue more in-depth at their next meeting on June 4.
Benner also mentioned that the Boothbay Harbor Public Works department had assisted the maintenance crew with removal of leaves from the fields, at no cost to the school. It was suggested that the trustees send a thank you to the Public Works crew as they did last year, most likely in the form of a gift certificate to House of Pizza for the entire crew. All the trustees were in support of this idea.
The next scheduled CSD trustees meeting will take place on June 4 at 5:15 p.m. in the Boothbay Region High School library. The public is welcome to attend.
