Old-fashioned Labor Day picnic on Westport Island

Wed, 08/22/2018 - 9:30am

Labor Day is both the traditional end of the summer vacation season and a day to celebrate the hard working people of America. The Westport Island Democrats invite the community to join them at Westport’s historic Town Hall the afternoon of Monday, Sept. 3, noon to 4 p.m. for an old-fashioned Labor Day picnic.

There will fun and games on the lawn, some political and Westport Island trivia, and a chance to meet the local Democratic candidates for the legislature: Holly Stover, who is running to be the representative for House District 89, which includes Westport Island, and Laura Fortman, who is running to represent Lincoln County in the state Senate. Islanders who are current or former members of trade unions will be given special recognition.

The picnic will feature a tug-of-war, which used to be a highlight of Westport Island picnics in years past. Then it was North battling South for bragging rights and the team captain’s name on a trophy in the Town Hall. To changes things up a little, though, this year we’ll make the challenge East vs West, depending on which side of Rt 144, the Main Road, you live on. We’ve got a long rope, so there will be lots of room for participants of all ages, shapes and sizes. Bring your neighbors!

Come with your favorite picnic food, and anything you’d like to share. We’ll have soft drinks and some simple munchies for all. No need to RSVP. But for more information contact April Thibodeau at 207-756-3691 or apr.thibodeau@gmail.com, or Jeff Tarbox at 207-776-2015 or jhtarbox@gwi.net
