Not too big to help the ‘little’ people
Dear Editor:
So much has been written about State Sen. Chris Johnson the politician, the candidate and his views. All are important to know for us to make our most educated choice when it is time to vote.
We want to take the time to tell you about our experience with Chris Johnson, the person, the man, the humanitarian.
We have a very special granddaughter. She is articulate, bright, beautiful and challenged. She struggles daily to live her life in society as any other 13-year-old. Her challenges are so great, difficult to understand and treat that she is unable to live at home. She has been bullied, scapegoated, evaluated, tested, hospitalized, medicated and so far every specialist she has encountered in the state of Maine has said her issues are beyond their scope of expertise and that she needs to get treatment out of state.
To say the least, insurance limitations and healthcare options specific to special needs in Maine are obstacles difficult to navigate.
In our quest for help, Chris Johnson agreed to meet with us one evening last spring. He was warm, kind, listened to our plight and understood our dilemma. He seemed to really care about our story, our granddaughter, and her challenges. He took notes and promised to go home that night to work on a strategy. He contacted us the next day and gave us the necessary guidance and options to navigate through this complicated healthcare system. He made himself available for follow up conversations. He continued to be involved and wanted updates and feedback.
Within a few days the insurance company granted permission to go ahead with the desired facility and treatment plan. Although our granddaughterʼs life remains in turmoil and her struggles continue, it is because of Chris Johnson and his genuine interest and assistance that more information and treatment options, once out of reach, have been gathered and tried.
We wholeheartedly support Chris Johnson the man, the humanitarian, the candidate, and his bid for reelection. He has given a new and honest meaning to helping the “little” people.
