Norman Tucker Norwood of Boothbay passed away peacefully on Jan. 20, 2022 at Stony Brook Nursing Home in Farmington after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

He was born March 8, 1949 in Rockland, Maine to Horcio Bruce Norwood and Elisabeth Poole Ashby. He graduated from Rockland High School. He was the eldest of 11 children and was predeceased by his mother, father, brother Alan Norwood, sister Deborah Norwood, stepmother Doris Norwood and stepfather Joseph Ashby of Troy, New York.

He is survived by nine siblings (sister Jennifer Ashby of Troy, New York and eight brothers); daughters Emmy Lou Cayabyab and Julie Norwood, wife Sylvia Norwood; grandchildren Adrian Cayabyab, Kennith Cayabyab, Alissa Cayabyab, Calvin Crocker, Austin Crocker, Tarenk Norwood, Chad Reed and Megan Reed; great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, many cousins, nieces and nephews; and his aunt, Kathy Norwood of South Bristol.

Norman traveled to New York City at 18 years old to be with his mother, Elisabeth Ashby, and worked as a trash attendant. He then moved back to Maine where he got a job at Bath Iron Works, later giving that job up not wanting to be a number and not a name. He then went to work for “Peanut” Lewis at the Gulf station in Boothbay Harbor and Andrews Gulf. He later worked at Washburn & Doughty Shipyard until it was destroyed by fire. He then did landscaping and was a bridge tender on the Barters Island bridge before retiring on the island.

In 1980, he married Sylvia Norwood, gaining two stepchildren, Randy Brown and Debrah Gray and their children.

He lived in Newagen and attended Boothbay Baptist Church where he did his community service and was a deacon.

The family would like to thank the community and the medical staff which took care of Norman until his passing.

A memorial service will be held in the spring at Boothbay Baptist Church and on the water off Newagen.

Donations may be made in his name to the Parkinson’s Foundation or Boothbay Baptist Church.
