News and notes from the Community Center

September is here. Where did the summer go? Hot, humid, chilly, rain, and, of course, beautiful weather! I hope you had a good Labor Day weekend.

And the winner is….. Gail MacPhee. She won the Bucket ‘o Lobsters raffle. All 10 lobsters were generously donated by Atlantic Edge Lobstermen. We will hold another raffle next spring, so watch for an announcement.

Fraud! Scam! Ouch! The Community Center along with Bath Savings Bank is offering a free Fraud Prevention Seminar on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Please note that in previous columns I said the date was Wednesday, Sept. 12. Wrong! It’s really Sept. 11 As we all know, scammers are getting creative and pervasive. Please put Sept. 11 on your calendar to come to The Community Center to benefit from this important opportunity to prevent getting “scammed!”

The Community Center would love to have a few more volunteer drivers to help our People Helping People program to get folks to their medical appointments, groceries, and personal errands. Most of the travel would be right here in the Boothbay region, but occasionally folks have to go to Damariscotta, and once in a while to Brunswick. Rather than being just opened ended waiting for a random phone call from us, what about volunteering for ONE particular day a week or every other week? Your ideas are welcome.

And here is some advance planning. Judy Milinowski will bring her QiJong class back to The Community Center this fall when the weather turns chillier. In the meantime, Judy is teaching her class outside at Spruce Point Inn on Monday and Friday mornings from 11 to noon. Come join her!

Now on a sad note, The Community Center is looking for my replacement. I retired at the end of August well after Uncle Sam says she was able to retire. We are looking for someone who is organized and can find their way around a computer (Word, Excel, etc.), our website, social media, and be a welcoming face at The Community Center for 4 hours per day. Please call 633-9876 or send an email to communitycenterofbbr.org.

Last, but certainly not least, fresh vegetables arrive every Friday morning (and sometimes on Monday morning) during the summertime. The veggies are very generously donated by Town Village Foodbank Farm and Veggies to Table. Get your bag ready to bring over on Mondays (sometimes) and Friday mornings until 2 p.m. during the summer!

Here is our schedule for Sept. 9 through Sept. 13:

Monday, Sept. 9: Drop-in Knitting 10 a.m.-noon

Tuesday, Sept. 10 Mah Jongg 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 11: Cribbage 12:30-2 p.m.

Thursday, Sept 12: Mexican Train Dominoes and Cribbage 10 a.m.-noon; Mah Jongg 9: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 13: Scrabble and Rummikub Noon-2 p.m.

Puzzles, coffee, tea, goodies, and good camaraderie are always available all week long. Please save us from eating too many goodies ourselves by coming in and sharing our snacks. And we always welcome new faces and fresh ideas!
