New bleachers are on the way to BRHS
The Community School District Board of Trustees has two major projects planned for the beginning of the school year: having new bleachers installed at the high school and updating the crosswalk between the school and the YMCA.
According to Maintenance Supervisor Dave Benner, the new bleachers are scheduled to be installed around the first of October. Removal and new installation should take around two weeks.
The trustees discussed what to do with the old bleachers. It was agreed that the old boards should be made available for some kind of alumni souvenir, but they decided to hold off on a decision until the board’s next meeting. They did instruct Benner to make sure the boards were not destroyed or discarded.
The crosswalk is set for installation in late September or early October, depending on the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT). Benner spoke with Duane Brunell, the safety officer for MDOT, who he said stated that the equipment for installation is currently on order and will be delivered “very soon.”
The new crosswalk will have additional signs located 500 feet in either direction as a warning to motorists. There will be poles on either side of the walk with a button to push to activate flashing lights around signs, and small reflective tape will be placed along the crosswalk. The flashing lights and reflective tape is meant to be especially useful during darker hours.
While the trustees had originally thought about placing flashing lights beneath the pavement, which wouldn't require replacement, according to Brunell such devices have proven to be “a maintenance nightmare” and he suggested they go with the tape. The downside to this is they need to be replaced rather frequently due to them being ripped up by snowplows.
The trustees also briefly discussed the high school auditorium. Damaged chairs in the front rows are currently being replaced with chairs from the back rows, but the trustees agreed the area needed major maintenance and could be a truly beautiful area if given a thorough update.
The next meeting of the CSD trustees will be held at 5:15 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the BRHS library.
