Creamed Baking Co. in Wiscasset opened Saturday and owner Meghan Olcott said she sold out on her first day.

Olcott moved to Maine from Charleston, South Carolina where she studied baking at the Art Institute of South Carolina. She has worked as a pastry chef in Charleston and at the Harbor Room in New Harbor. This is her first shop and it’s been her dream to open a bakery for pretty much all her life.

Olcott’s mother, Brenda Olcott, a business consultant, was in the shop Monday helping her daughter get her new business off the ground. She said baking has always been her daughter’s passion. “We went to a friend’s wedding when she was young, and they had the most incredible, artistic cake that looked like it came out of a Dr. Seuss book. Meghan looked at it and said, ‘It’s art you can eat.’ It’s been her passion ever since.”

The family owns a summer home at McFarland’s Cove in South Bristol and has called Maine home for over 100 years. “My great-grandfather came here and bought land in McFarland’s Cove in 1900,” Brenda said. “We have always come up summers and anytime we could, and this is always where we’ve felt like home was. Now we’ve decided to make it permanent.”

There is seating inside the shop and outside on a deck overlooking the Sheepscot River. Olcott plans to serve breakfast pastries including baked donuts, fresh-baked bread and English muffins, croissants and bagels, and egg sandwiches. There’s an espresso maker for cappuccinos, lattes, macchiatos and frappuccinos. The shop will also have fresh-made lemonades, and iced and sweet teas in a myriad of flavors.

The front room is small but sufficient, and the kitchen out back, with a large new oven and walk-in cooler, is spacious.

The shop, at 49 Water St. beside Red’s Eats, was formerly Cameron Clan Kettle Corn. The popcorn is still available at the bakery.
