‘Mystery twigs’
On Friday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association (SVCA) and the Hidden Valley Nature Center (HVNC) in Jefferson will host a winter tree identification workshop led by naturalist Lynne Flaccus.
The trees may look barren this time of year without their foliage, but while the days are growing longer the buds are preparing to unfurl and provide the forest with multiple shades of green. With careful observation of clues in the shape, texture, color, pattern and even taste of twigs, one can learn how to identify a tree by its twigs, buds and bark.
Flaccus will also discuss what tree species are important for wildlife; what makes good gum or tea; and what’s best for use as a fire starter.
A donation of $5 is suggested and snowshoes are available for rent from HVNC. Register online at www.hvnc.org, email codey@hvnc.org or call 207-200-8840.
