Molly Thibault wins MPA award
Boothbay Region High School senior Molly Thibault credits her organizational skills with her ability to serve on various school committees, play three varsity sports, hostess at Robinson's Wharf, serve as a nanny and set 150 lobster traps in the summer.
Her school activities led Principal Dan Welch to nominate Thibault for this year's Maine Principals’ Association award for academic achievement, leadership activities and school citizenship. She will be one of 140 Maine students recognized on Saturday, April 8 at an MPA luncheon at the Spectacular Events Center in Bangor.
“I like to look for kids that express leadership qualities. She meets the requirements of a strong school citizen,” said Welch.
Thibault is the daughter of Matt and Tanya Thibault. She grew up on Southport Island and attended Southport Central School.
At BRHS, she became involved in three student organizations: the Interact Club, of which she is president; the Student Health Advisory Board (SHAB), and the Grant Planning Committee, which helps students prepare for college including raising funds to assist financially needy graduates. She also helps mentor elementary students and prepare them for high school by providing a positive role model. She served for three years on the planning committee of the Maine Youth Action Network and attended Dirigo Girls State in Bangor in 2016.
Thibault is on the girls’ varsity field hockey, swimming and lacrosse teams, although she does not claim to be a great athlete. “I enjoy being in the team environment,” she said. She admits that being involved in so many activities requires some scheduling skills. “I like to manage my time. I do things while they're fresh in my mind.” She moves from one event to the next, even if it means cutting short her participation to get to the next meeting.
That extends to her summer regimen of shift work at Fisherman's Wharf, nanny duty, and hauling traps twice a week with her father. “I may cut back on the number of traps this summer,” she said.
Thibault has been accepted by and will attend Unity College where she hopes to major in environmental studies. “I like the idea of an adventure-based education.”
