Miles & St. Andrews offers suicide survivors group
Following a death by suicide, loved ones left behind often experience a complex form of grief which can include intense feelings of guilt, self-reproach and questioning. The social stigma associated with suicide can make it especially difficult to talk about, and there may be further complications not common to normal grieving such as the interest of the media, inquiries from police and difficult family relationships.
In response to an unprecedented number of suicides in the Boothbay region in the past year, Miles & St. Andrews Hospice Health and Hospice will offer a six-week "Survivors of Suicide" support group for family members and close friends of suicide victims starting on March 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The Survivors of Suicide support group will be facilitated by Lisa Hammer, a medical social worker who is a member of Miles & St. Andrews hospice team. Hammer specializes in grief and loss and has extensive experience facilitating bereavement support groups in Brunswick, Augusta, and Damariscotta. She is also a regular presenter throughout Maine on the nature of complicated bereavement.
“The loss of a loved one by suicide is unique and the grief that ensues can be intense and long term,” Hammer said. “Whether you have survived a suicide loss recently or years ago, this support group is a place where you will find understanding and hope, strength and comfort.” The group will be co-facilitated by Don Weatherbee from CHANS of Brunswick.
Kathy Bean, R.N., executive director of Miles & St. Andrews Home Health & Hospice said, “Family and close friends of those who have died by suicide walk a path that is filled with guilt, confusion and emotional turmoil. Even those who are blessed with strong support networks can feel extremely isolated.” She added, “Because of this, we are deeply grateful to the Coulombe Center for Health Improvement, NAMI of Maine and the Boothbay region’s Hope and Resilience Committee for inviting us to join with them to help local survivors rebuild their lives.”
The six-week closed group requires a minimum of four participants and is free of charge. Registration by Feb. 20 is required. To register, or for more information, please call Miles & St. Andrews Home Health & Hospice’s Bereavement Services at 563-4177.
