McKown and Juniper Points: The Bake, tennis and more
Fog and a light drizzle didn’t subdue the Lobster Bake on the 1st, held inside and out at the Community House. Over 180 lobsters met their fate, and several dozen hot dogs too. Jim Dilley and his crew put on their best chef hats and also cooked up corn and clams to perfection. You know it’s a real lobster bake when your lobster is sporting seaweed. The dessert spread was incredible. A prize for the recipe for the ricotta cake. Seriously. And there were two of Helene Barnes’ special chocolate-chocolate cakes. Co-chairs Cindy Gagne and Jean Dilley did a fabulous job, backed up by a huge team of volunteers, some of them helping out for the first time. A big thank you to all.
The fog crept in again last Saturday, pushing Burnt Island Picnic and Field Day to this Saturday, the 15th. Same time - 11:00. An email will have been sent, but remember – catch the shuttle at Juniper Point Dock (not Moore’s), starting at 10:30.
Next Wednesday night, the 19th, is the first history/story telling at the Community House. This is a casual conversation and show and tell, open to everyone - owners, renters and visitors. Show up at 7 and I guarantee that you’ll learn things you never knew about the Community.
For the Juniors, Sunday nights are Sundaes plus Bingo night at 6:30 at the Community House. Tuesdays are movie night, also at 6:30.
Dave sent in a slew of tennis news. Results from the Parent Child Event on July 4th are as follows:
Adult Division had 8 teams; Soren and Matt Zimmer won the round robin.
Advanced Junior Division also had 8 teams with Theo and Stu Syndman taking the Finalist spot after Susan Kirby and Edie Himes' victory.
Green Ball had 5 teams. Finn and Tyler Lewis edged out Xavier and George Morrison by one point
Orange Ball brought out six participant (Margaret Boe, Wyatt Gaines, Claire and Abby Taylor, William Lindberg, Ella Helming) for Round Robin play followed by the Orange Ball favorite “Crazy Tennis.”
Red Ball participants were Cordelia with Aunt Jean Hunt and Emma and Dad Martin Lindberg, who played many "Fruit Salad" games.
The Ladies/Member Guest Social on Wednesday brought 16 ladies together, both JP members and guests, for 2 hours of fun, social tennis, with a raffle at the end.
The 3rd Annual Matt Himes Birthday Bash Tournament, last Thursday, resulted in George Himes and Mike Derezin tying for first place!
There were 2 Junior matches vs BHYC. Dave reported lots of good Junior playing.
Ben Lewis has been a volunteer assistant with the Red and Orange Ball groups.
Walking back from the Community House last week I spotted something resembling a newer version of our swim float at Blakes. With good weather and luck it should be in.
Over the 4th, It looked like every parking space on the Points, and more, was taken. The Blooms/Heinrich’s cottage was full with Celia and Saul, daughter Maya, son Aaron and daughter-in-law Erin and two little ones, Emerson and Addie. Aaron and Erin came out from California for two, mostly damp, weeks. (Your writer was taken back 20 plus years hearing “Mom, I’m going up to play tennis with Aaron”.)
The annual Camp Corbin week was in session, seemingly with more campers than ever. Between the Corbin grandchildren and friends (now in their late teens, twenties and 30) up late into the night and the much younger Dooley grandchildren starting in at 7 am, it’s amazing anyone slept down here on Ledge Road.
This week note that the Community House will close on Saturday, the 15th, at 5 for a private event.
Please remember the Community House closes every night at 10, unless the weather is abysmal, when Dave might lock it earlier.
Come on Thursdays 5-6 for your workout with Joan and on Saturdays 8:45 to 10 for Romee’s yoga. No need to register, just show up. Both are welcoming to newbies, and mats are available. Payment to both by donation.
