Mallett Brothers rock the Opera House
One of the highlights and closing features to the 52nd Windjammer Days Festival happened the night of June 27. No, it wasn't the fireworks, and it didn't get rained out.
It's Friday in our little gem, the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor, and a crowd filters in at a nice easy pace, not filling the house to capacity, but giving a good amount of support to one of Maine's premier talents, The Mallett Brothers.
Luke and Will Mallett are no strangers to great music. Their dad is Dave Mallet, a guy who has been filling venues around the country with his folk ballads and warm sound for decades.
Supporting them are band mates: drummer, Brian Higgins, bassist Nick Leen, and multi-instrumentalist Wally Wenzel on slide and lap steel, as well as Dobro. Nate Soule was not playing this evening and was missed.
The band has most recently been on tour opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd, Toby Keith, the Allman Brothers and many other bands along the way. There are three albums/CDs out to date; their first, self-titled “The Mallett Brothers Band,” in 2010; “Low Down” in 2011 and “Land” in April 2013. All of the recordings are available on iTunes, Amazon and through CD Baby.
Opening with a great set of what many think of as country rock, but I like to reference that the style and showmanship they emulate on the stage is not something that should be pigeonholed, as it could come up on any spot on your radio dial.
Taking this listener along, it was a roller coast of tunes that continued to build and break in technical bursts of melodic journey — much like a rock opera. Songs built-up to high jamming between Wally on steel and Luke with some great leads. Will and Luke cranked out a well-tuned harmony set of lyrics and down to waltz tempos.
At one point, Luke told the audience of his first attempt at a waltz; but it certainly didn't seem it. The song was filled with sensitive verse and soft melody that made me feel I was anything but slow dancing in a high school gym. Then in the next song, I might have even waited and watched to see if there would a “Pete Townsend whirlwind” on guitar and realized I was not watching “Tommy” the rock opera.
Bottom line: If you have not seen the Mallet Brothers Band this is not your father's 'Olds-mo-music,' get out to see the guys at their next appearance.
The entire band gave a personal thanks to the Opera House for having them and like many others, complimented it for being such a great venue for sound and intimacy. If you've been to an Opera House show you know, if you haven't, check out the great lineup for this year at www.boothbayoperahouse.com.
Support local Maine music and become a fan/friend of them on Facebook. Both Luke and Will are extremely personal and approachable with friends, alerting them to area shows and music releases. You can also catch a full tour line up on www.mallettbrothersband.com.
