Local sailors do well at Junior Olympics
Boothbay region sailors brought honor and distinction to the region with many top finishes in various divisions of the Junior Olympics held last week at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club.
In the OPTI Red Fleet, Jax van der Veen of BHYC finished first, Andrew Turley of Southport Yacht Club finished third, and Ethan Barnard of BHYC and Maximillian Freund of Southport Yacht Club were also well up in the fleet.
In the Blue Division, Dane Phippen of SYC took top honors, Blake Erhard finished fourth. Keiran Lorentzen of SYC, Matthew McCuskey of BHYC and Marcus Russell of BHYC also placed.
In the White Division, Emma Rose van der Veen and Ryan Russell of BHYC were also finishers.
The Green division for novice racers saw William LaBrecque of Southport took top honors followed in fifth by teammate Eli Anderson and in sixth by Tess McComiskey of BHYC.
Also placing high in the standings were Bryce Jacobs of Southport, Augi Barnard of BHYC, Shannon Pyne of SYC, Henry Currier and Helmut Dungan of BHYC and Lucas Hardwick, Jack Thompson and Ethan Gruntfest of BHYC.
Timothy Maurer of Southport was fifth in the Laser division.
In the largest fleet of the race, the 420 division, the team of Jasper Houston and Annie Britten took second place and SYC sailors David Turley and Jennifer Killian were fifth.
Others finishing well were David Wollins and Kendall Brewer of SYC and Nuala Spillane and Megan Roach of Southport and Emma Jacobs and Kelley Phippen, Sally Apolinsky and Tessa Houston, Kiley Roach and Alex Maurer, all of Southport.
The teams of Aiden Clark and Caleb Gray, Meredith McCuskey and Corinne Poitras, Katherine Clark and Caroline Hunt, and Milhous Dungan and Teddy Matel, all of BHYC, also finished well.
