LOAFS turn pennies into food
Two Boothbay-area organizations that do a lot of good in their community gathered in the lobby of Boothbay Region Elementary School a little after noon on Tuesday, May 9.
Members of the Boothbay Region Food Pantry met with the LOAFS, a group of BRES seventh and eighth graders whose mission is to donate monies and items gathered through fundraising events to local charities, as well as to organize fun events for the school. On May 9, LOAFS, which stands for Leaders Organizing Activities for School, gave the food pantry a check from monies raised during the BRES Penny Wars.
Penny Wars take place throughout the school in the fall. Containers are left in each classroom and students fill them with change. The classroom collecting the most change wins a pizza party. Judy Dorr, BRES technology coordinator and the faculty advisor for the LOAFS, said that this year, the Pre-K and kindergarten classes gathered the most change, but the overall generosity of students throughout the school enabled the LOAFS to present the pantry with $1,270.
This is the second straight year the LOAFS have donated to the pantry. During the presentation, Fleet Davies, a co-president for the pantry, said, “We’re so grateful for your efforts and for your generosity. Your donation will help feed 250 people in the area.”
Several members of the pantry came to BRES for the presentation, including Barbara Fritz, Bawn Clifton, Wendy Johnson, John and Jane Lunt, Richard Annino, Jennifer Litchfield, Betsy Hastings, Fleet Davies, Frank Redman, Helen Meserve, Doreen Dun, Karen Keyes and Andrea Hutchins.
The LOAFS include Glory Blethen, Kylie Brown, Grace Campbell, Meghan Clifford, Kayla Cohen, Emily Crocker, Isabelle Harkins, Madison Nichols, Marissa Peters, Maddy Teele and Camellia Warlo.
