Lining up for the Cookie Walk

Forget the roses and chocolates. On Valentine’s Day those looking for a sweet way to celebrate were at the Community Center when it opened its doors for the fourth annual cookie walk.

Forty-five bakers turned out their best work. Tables in the center were lined with trays and plates of cookies and, in one case, containers of homemade trail mix.

By 2 p.m., 50 people had paid $8 each to fill a container with homemade cookies. “It’s a good fundraiser for us,” president Shawn Lewin said. “It’s a nice way to get people involved - baking and supporting the Center.”

This year's cookie walk was scheduled for Feb. 13, but the weather had other plans. Since the Center is closed when the schools are closed, the event was postponed a day.

Center volunteer Tina Roche recruited the bakers, calling from a list of those who donated cookies last year. Her efforts started about two weeks before and cookies were being delivered right up to the morning of the event. “Everyone I asked was more than happy to help,” she said. “It was a great response and I want to thank everyone who helped us out.”

While the Community Center usually closes at 4 p.m., it traditionally remains open until 5 the day of the cookie walk so those coming home after work can stop in. Cookies that don’t sell at the walk are sold the next day.
