Lincoln County currently CMP’s hardest hit for outages
Lincoln County accounted for nearly half the outages in Central Maine Power’s service area shortly after 7 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30.
The county had 2,028 of CMP’s latest tally of 4,438 outages, according to the company’s website at www.cmpco.com. Most of the county’s outages were in Jefferson, with 1,114 customers out of power; Nobleboro followed distantly with 358 out.
Wiscasset had 43 customers out; Dresden, 21; and Edgecomb, 7. All of Edgecomb’s neighbors on the peninsula had lights, however.
No ongoing outages were reported for Alna or Westport Island, either.
The storm sparking the new rash of outages could have dumped a lot more snow had it not been such a fast mover, said meteorologist Margaret Curtis of the National Weather Service’s Gray office. Snow was coming down late Sunday night in amounts as high as an inch an hour, she said.
It stopped snowing in Wiscasset at about 1 a.m. Monday, Curtis said.
While some areas reported as much as 14 inches of snow inland, the coast received a mix of wet heavy snow and freezing rain that resulted in hazardous conditions along the Midcoast.
There is little hope the new snow and week-old ice still weighing down branches will melt any time soon; Near-zero temperatures are expected in the coming nights, with sub-zero ones possible for Wednesday night, Curtis said.
Lincoln Country was probably the worst area hit with freezing rain, according to Curtis.
“If you had ice left over from the ice storm last weekend that has not completely melted off, and then you add ice with some more ice and more snow, it's that combination that snaps a lot of limbs,” Curtis said.
CMP customers without service are encouraged to report outages by dialing 1-800-696-1000.
