Learning about philanthropy at Southport Central School

In considering the challenges so many are facing during this pandemic, a donor decided to make a contribution to an organization to be determined by Southport Central School students. This donor thought about the beneficial effects of having students learn about philanthropy, and the critical thinking involved in considering needs beyond our own. The class set to work, discussing what non-profit means, and researching and listing the many non-profits in our state, before deciding to narrow them down to Lincoln County. After much discourse, the students decided to focus their energies on St. Andrews Village, The Southport Library, and The Lincoln County Humane Society.

Individual research followed, where each student was required to learn more about the three businesses, paying particular attention to the goals of each facility, and what the donation might support. After thoughtful discussion, a vote was taken and the Lincoln County Animal Shelter was overwhelmingly chosen as the recipient of this generous donation. Ms.Tammy Walsh, of the Edgecomb facility, has indicated that they are experiencing larger than normal medical costs for senior animals and the money will be put towards these costs, as well as purchasing materials to expand their behavior and training programs.

The donor has indicated that he would like this to be an ongoing project, and one that might inspire others to consider the same. As a matter of fact, the ripple effect began when the original donation of $1,000 was recognized by a family member, who then contributed $500 to this year’s project. Should you feel inspired to consider this or a similar project, you are encouraged to contact administration in your respective school district.
