Land for Southport’s Future - Where are you?

Dear Editor:

The other day I received a nice letter from the Southport Community Project asking for a donation to enhance the wooded play space at our island school. The committee’s goal is $75,000. As I continued to think about this ... it suddenly occurred to me ...

It’s been years since we have heard anything from Land for Southport’s Future. Many generous people gladly donated money to purchase the Gardner property, however, that never came to fruition. I, for one, would be interested to know what the gross donations totaled, less expenses, should show a substantial balance remaining in LFSF’s checking/savings and any investment accounts, etc. I don’t believe any of the donations were ever refunded to any of the donors.

So, my thought is, what better way for Land for Southport’s Future to use the existing funds (that were so generously donated by people everywhere) than to willingly and generously gift the Southport Community Project with $75,000. From nonprofit to nonprofit ... to me it’s a win-win for our community!

Although this is just my personal opinion, I feel that due to the changing economy, increased land values and real estate costs, it is most likely that Land for Southport’s Future will not be able to afford to purchase any land or buildings on our lovely little island. So, I would like to ask the officers and board of directors of Land for Southport’s Future to please consider gifting the necessary funds to the Southport Community Project.
