Kit Sherrill and Ginny Sheay at All Saints Sept. 6
Those of us who have looked forward in the summers to hearing Kit Sherrill preach at All Saints by-the Sea will have a rare opportunity to hear Sherrill’s thoughtful and compassionate words again next Sunday, Sept. 6. The liturgist at the 8 and 10 a.m.
Holy Communion services will be our other well loved Southport clergy, Ginny Sheay. A social hour with refreshments follows the 10 a.m. service. On Tuesday, Sept. 8, Rev. Sheay will lead a discussion on the church porch at 9 a.m. These will be the final services of the All Saints 2015 summer season, but Episcopal services continue throughout the year at St. Columba’s at 32, Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor.
Perhaps the most frequent of all guest clergy at All Saints, Sherrill first conducted services there in 1968. Over the years Kit and Leigh and their family traveled to Maine from homes in Missouri, Connecticut, Washington D.C., and Princeton, New Jersey. Rev. Sherrill graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1965 and was ordained in the Episcopal Church in his home diocese of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 2001 he retired as senior associate rector of Trinity Church in Princeton, New Jersey. At that time Kit and Leigh became year-round residents of Southport. In retirement, Rev. Sherrill has been active in many ways in the community, including eight years of service as moderator at Southport Town meetings.
Sheay, although partially retired, continues to serve as associate at Trinity Church in Solebury, Pennsylvania. A long-time summer resident of Southport, Dr. Sheay has had a career as both a music educator and as a pioneer in the role of women in the Episcopal Church. One of the first two women to be ordained in the Diocese of New Jersey, Dr. Sheay was the first woman in that diocese to be called as rector of a parish. She served as a deputy in the national church’s General Convention and was elected to the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, USA. A graduate of Westminster Choir College and a former organist and choir director, Sheay guides the All Saints music program including its annual joint Evensong service with St. Columba’s.
All Saints by-the-Sea is on Southport Island on All Saints Road about two miles on your left as you drive south on Route 238 (look for the Episcopal Church sign by the side of the road). Parking is available along Route 238, or if necessary, in the limited number of handicapped parking spaces off All Saints Road.
A golf cart will ferry persons from the handicapped lot to the church steps. You may also come to church by private boat or by the tour boat Novelty, which leaves Boothbay Harbor from Pier 8 at 9 a.m. Novelty picks up passengers from the church dock at 11:40 a.m. for return to Boothbay. The very beautiful and simple wood chapel is open for quiet prayer and meditation during the week. More information about the church and its history can be found at http://allsaintssouthport.org.
