Juniper and McKown Points: Improvement Day report
Hats off to a fantastic first week of summer. The rain held off Saturday for our JPVIS Improvement Day. The heart of the community was humming with Romee’s yoga class finishing up shavasana inside the Community House while the clanking of shovels and wheelbarrows commenced outside. The energy forces merged, resulting in a spiffed up landscape a few hours later.
A big shout out to the top-of-the-chart group “Fred and the Moderettes”. Fred and Dibby Moder’s three adult children were here for two weeks with spouses and significant others. They capped off their visit by installing the new stone drip line along the Community House west side. Noting their strength and determination, Jim Dilley then engaged them to wrangle the lobster cooking pots out of the attic into his truck. Let no young labor go to waste. Thank you Fred and Dibby, Emily Moder and Greg Chandler, Charlie and Alexandra Moder and Daniel Moder and Judith Yeo. Please come back.
Meanwhile, Jeff Kowalski, Susan Kirby, Barb Gray, Harry Moser, Jose McComiskey and Bruce Willard were on hands and knees plucking every weed and errant stone from the tennis courts. Judy Leoni and Amy Whitten cleaned out the garden next to the lower tennis courts, a huge job, and Ray Paetzold and Al Sirois (a new member) pruned our scraggly shrugs - what a transformation! Hugh Phibbs filled in the stumbly path between the Community House and Juniper Pt Road with wood chips. Our Jack of all trades, Jim Dilley, was everywhere at once. Prior to Improvement Day, Jo Moser did a wonderful job with the flowering plants in the window boxes and tubs. Ask her about “thrilling, filling, spilling”.
Few things happen without Dave Taylor at the helm, Thank You Dave for organizing everyone. I’m sure I’ve left some folks out; I’ll catch you in the Fall Clean Up!
Anne Markette and Jose McComiskey organized a buzzy Welcome Back Reception Sunday night. Without an exact head count (running out of name tags is always a sign of a good turnout) the Community House was surprisingly cool-ish for a muggy night and the food was fabulous. Susan Schadler announced our new full-season members Michael Cinnamon, Maria Coppola, Elaine Jones and Al and Shirley Sirois. Welcome to JPVIS!
Time for the young ones to occupy the Community House. Every Tuesday night at 6:30 there’s a movie and snacks, Sunday, also at 6:30, is for sundaes and games. If you are past the age where youth itself won’t work off excesses, join Joan Warburton-Phibbs on Thursdays from 5-6 for an exercise/movement class and/or Romee May’s Yoga For All class on Saturdays 8:45-10. Both women are professionals with many years of experience, i.e. if you are unsure of your ability, they will help you. Payment by donation please. No need to sign up.
Next up: Lobster Bake! If you haven’t volunteered already it’s not too late to let either Cindy Gagne or Jean Dilley know of your availability. This is the most labor intensive event of the summer. Help out, even if it’s bagging up trash afterwards.
Tennis is hopping: sign up for July 4th 11 a.m. parent/child round robin. On July 5th there’s a Ladies member/guest Social at 9:30.
I was mistaken last week. It’s this week that has the early Register deadline – Friday morning for your news. annedooley@mindspring.com
