Juniper and McKown Points: Games, 40 somethings and more
This summer has reminded us of the adage, “mother nature bats last.” Once again the Burnt Island Picnic had to be cancelled due to fog. But the organizers rallied and on Saturday afternoon the youngest set headed to Reed’s Beach for games. And the sun even came out, if briefly. Participants included Wyatt, Claire, Sam, Lily, Abby, Margaret, CJ, Katherine, Ethan, Ella and Quillan. Teams Sea Otter and Hermit Crab vied to win the dress-up relay followed by balloon relay, egg on a spoon, potato sack and toilet paper mummy racing. The teams benefited from the strong captaining work of Katherine Taylor and Sam Gaines as well as line judging services of Quillan Morrison and his team of hermit crabs. For good measure there was a water balloon toss with some adults joining in. Apparently there was one shuttle to Burnt earlier (see the tennis news below). Thank you Christina and Vanessa for continuing this tradition.
Thanks to the Swope family, this account of Saturday evening came in: It was a very special time for a whole crew of 40 somethings who grew up as a gang on Juniper Point: Kate Swope, Christina and Julie Edwards, Vanessa Lipschitz, Molly Geaghan, Toby Robinson, Dave Morrison, Sarah Barton, Devon Crawford, Laura Stevenson and Charlie Beattie along with their partners and children, too numerous to mention, gathered in the Community House for a fun gourmet pot luck. Life long friendships forged on the beach, docks, paths, boats and cottages on Juniper Point illuminate what a special place and cherished sense of community we all share. It reminds us that “You can always go home.”
As usual there is lots going on in tennis. Dave gives us the following report: We sent over a crew to Ocean Point on Wednesday. George Himes, Edie Himes, Lucas Swan, John Swan, Emily Fish, Katherine Taylor, Sawyer Hilmo had a fun boat ride over, thanks to Ingrid, then played a couple hours of tennis against the Ocean Point team, with the result a close 36-32 victory, according to Susan's count.
Our Mixed Doubles Social on Thursday night involved over 20 people rotating around playing some fun tennis. The night culminated with the group singing happy birthday to Christina Edwards and Charles Morrison winning the berries and cream raffle prize.
Field Day was on, then off, then on again. Thanks to David and Quillan Morrison for taking a few folks over on their boat, in the rain, prior to the official cancellation. The group had lunch on the porch of the Keeper's House, and the DMR live-in staff gave us a tour of the renovated house and light house. Saturday afternoon, the sun actually came out and Reed's beach was the place to be.
Next up we have a "Taco-Tequila-Triples Tennis Social" on Thursday night. (That’s tonight if you’re reading this on-line.) This event involves playing "Triples Tennis" with a team, followed by a Make-Your-Own- Taco-Bar social hour! Sombreros encouraged!
Our Sunday Ice Cream Social night has been popular with the addition this year of Bingo. Bring the kids over at 6:30 to have some Sunday Fun Day action.
If you’re reading this column fresh off the presses on Wednesday afternoon there is still time for an early supper and to get to History/Story Telling at the Community House tonight at 7:00. Carey Swope is leading the discussion so it’s guaranteed to be fun and interesting.
