Junior Olympics a success
The Junior Olympics was an outstanding success thanks to the help of over 60 of our loyal members.
We have two weeks to relax and prepare to host a four day weekend of events, the Maine State Opti Championships on August 1 and 2 and the annual BHYC Regatta on August 3 and 4. Thanks to Bob McCann for masterminding the whole event,
Last Friday was the first Classic Boat Race of the season. The 24 sailboats registered for the Classic Race sponsored by the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club got all the wind and waves they asked for Saturday.
The 9 nautical mile race took the sailors from an inner harbor start out past The Cuckolds and then across to Fisherman’s Passage near Ocean Point, then a final broad reach leg past Tumbler Island to an inner harbor finish. Winds in the 16-18 knot range proved difficult but most boats persevered in the conditions and enjoyed the brisk breeze.
Vessels ranged in size from Boothbay harbor One Designs to Winsome, a 48-foot ketch. Gemini, an Etchells, skippered by Sandy Taft, finished first with a corrected time of 1 hour, 47minutes and 35 seconds. The boat averaged 5.3 knots/hour. Second place went to Winsome, a Dawn 48-foot owned by Chip Davison, while third place went to Patty Berger in Wildflower, a Boothbay Harbor One Design. Corrected finish times: Gemini, 16:13:08; Winsome, 16:16:10; and Wildflower, 16:21:55.
Also entered in the race were Panache with skipper Bob Scribner; Varuna, Bob Stuart; Fiddler, Phil Brooks; Queen Mab, Commodore Neil Newton; Delilah, Charles Race; North Winbf, Dan Hare; Skye, Gail Gall; Allegro, Cathy Latta; Salute, Bob Vawter; Nerides, Gene Story; Bramasole, Dexter Morrission; Acacia, Vincent George; and Candide, Mel Rines.
The Classic is an informal, fun race intended for full-keel designs, heavy cruisers over 25 years old and the classic Boothbay Harbor One Design sailboats. The race is free and open to all.
The second race in the two race Classic Series takes place on Friday, Aug. 23.
And on Saturday the second race in the Commodore’s Cup series was run. In Division 2 Firebolt skippered by Bill Hunt took top honors, Panache with Bob Scribner at the helm took second and third was Momentum captained by Vice Commodore Lee Krow.
In the One Design Division, Fraulein skippered by veteran Debbie Swan took top honors, Galatea with old faithful Tommy Tavenner at the helm took second, and Charisma with Eric Hakanson finished third.
Monday night was the Jr. Program sponsored Family Pizza and Bingo night, a crowd of over 50 enjoyed the Italian repast and competed for unbelievably valuable prizes.
Tuesday night the lure was some of the most interesting wines in the world coupled with matching menu items from the palate of Chef George.
Thursday night cocktails are hosted by the West Harbor Pond Samoset Road gang organized by Susan Morris.
Next week there will be no regular snack infused cocktail hour because of the large crowd attending the days golf event on Wednesday, chaired by Byron Borst, and dinner and the upcoming Maine State Opti event, which happens Thursday and Friday.
Tuesday night upcoming is the pre-cruise social gathering as well as Chef George’s fabulous Prime Rib night.
While we were in the sports division, we neglected to report that the winners of the BHYC Men's Doubles Tennis Tournament on July 20 were Dick Stevenson and Paul Whitehead. Runners-up were Moose McDonough and Phil Rubel.
If you are a gambler, be sure to be on hand Friday night for the weekly drawing which is now at $250 in dining room credits.
You only need to be present at the time of drawing (around 1830). Last week Chip Davison’s name was drawn but alas he had left about half an hour before the drawing so up the pot goes by $50 each week.
