Dear Editor:

What a joy to read in the Portland Press Herarld, at the "top of the fold," the glorious news about Nancie Atwell. Front page news celebrating an educator!

The first "Nobel Prize of Teaching" honoring her dedication and devotion to her students, including the founding of her school in Edgecomb, was presented to her in Dubai.

As a former teacher, it is thrilling to see accolades given to our profession, and credit to someone who values reading and compassion as ultimate tools to learning. And to know that the prize money will be donated back to the school for tuitions and more books is simply over the top!

I have been proud to recently become a Maine resident, and to live in this area where creative approaches to life long learning begin. Thank you, Nancie.
