Boothbay Region Garden Club

It’s all about the buzz

Linda Redman, Boothbay Region Garden Club (BRGC) member and local beekeeper, recently addressed the garden club on the intricacies and rewards of beekeeping. Redman walked the group through not only the fascinating life cycle of a healthy beehive but also through the step-by-step process of establishing beekeeping as an intriguing hobby that contributes to a healthy environment for us all. The takeaway: We need bees to pollinate fruit, vegetable and seed crops on which every healthy diet depends. We need flourishing gardens so that the bees can produce honey — a monumental task for such tiny insects.  A few facts to keep in mind when you see honey bees buzzing around your garden: One single bee usually visits between 50 and 1,000 flowers per day and to produce one pound of honey, bees must collect nectar from about two million flowers.
