Icy roads result in school bus accident; no injuries
Icy road conditions are being cited as the cause of a school bus accident Thursday morning, Jan. 26 in Boothbay. AOS 98 bus driver Bob Jacobson encountered ice-covered roads as he began his route about 6:50 a.m, according to AOS 98 Transportation Director Dave Benner.
Benner said Jacobson encountered “untreated roads” as the bus headed down Butler Road toward Pension Ridge Road.
“The driver lost control as the bus headed down hill and tried to negotiate a curve. The bus left the road and hit a tree,” Benner said.
Jacobson wasn’t injured. No students were aboard the bus when it left the road.
Benner estimated the bus sustained about $5,000 in damages. The total will be known once Benner compiles his first report to the insurance company. Once the bus is reviewed by an insurance adjuster, it will be sent to O’Connor’s Auto Park for repairs.
AOS 98 used a spare bus to complete Jacobson’s route. Benner said the accident caused a 30- to 60-minute delay for students arriving at school.
