Historical recipe workshop at Castle Tucker July 23
Sandra L. Oliver, noted food historian and celebrated author of “Saltwater Foodways: New Englanders and their foods at sea and ashore in the nineteenth century,” will present a mini-workshop in historical recipe research at Castle Tucker on Thursday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The workshop will be held in the Castle Tucker shed adjoining the pantry and kitchen. Advance purchase is required. Space is very limited. Admission is $25 for Historic New England members and $35 for nonmembers. Call 207-882-7169 to purchase or visit www.historicnewengland.org. Castle Tucker is located at 2 Lee Street in Wiscasset. A tour of the house is not part of the program, but attendees can take a tour of the house after the program at no additional cost.
Learn how recipes develop and what you need to know about 19th century ingredients and cooking techniques before you start to cook. Feel free to bring your own computer with wireless connectivity to explore online recipe research.
Oliver began working in food history in 1971 when she founded the fireplace cooking program at Mystic Seaport Museum. She is also the author of “Food in Colonial and Federal America.”
She co-authored “Giving Thanks: Thanksgiving History and Recipes” with Kathleen Curtin of Plimoth Plantation.
In 2008, “Saltwater Foodways Companion Cookbook” was published, a recipes-only paperback version of the recipes from “Saltwater Foodways.”
Oliver has appeared on Maine television demonstrating recipes and talking about how people ate and cooked in the past. She is a frequent speaker at museums, historical and culinary organizations, and when asked, provides training programs in historic cooking for museum interpreters.
The kitchen at Castle Tucker includes four generations of kitchen technology still in place where it was used. Very little was changed in the house after 1900. Preserved by three generations of Tucker women, Castle Tucker is a historic house museum shown as the family left it in 1997 when they gave it to Historic New England.
