Higgins, Campbell lead Seahawks at state track championships
The Boothbay Region High School indoor track team finished strong Feb. 17 at the Class B state championships in Lewiston as Karen Higgins and Rose Campbell led the Seahawks with scoring performances. Higgins took second place in the two-mile run and Campbell took fifth and sixth in the 55m and 200m dash, respectively.
Coach Nick Scott said Higgins was “fantastic,” consistent with her performances throughout the season. Her placement earned her a spot at the New England Championships in March.
Scott added that Campbell outperformed her record, beating girls seeded far ahead of her. According to him, she was seeded around 14th in the 200m dash and ninth in the 55m dash.
“Rose ran out of her mind. She ran such massive (personal records),” he said. “This season for Rose has really been quite transformative.”
The girls results were as follows: Campbell and Moriah Smith placed fifth and 19th in the 55m dash prelims in 7.55 and 7.96; Campbell placed fifth in the 55m dash finals in 7.60; Campbell and Smith placed sixth and 27th in the 200m dash in 27.43 and 29.03; Higgins placed second in the two-mile run in 11:25.30; and the girls relay team placed 16th in the 4x200m relay in 2:02.08. Scott said that each girl ran personal records at the meet.
Boys results were: AJ Crocker placed 11th in the two-mile run in 11:08.15; the boys relay team placed 21st in the 4x200 meter relay in 1:56.82; and the boys relay team placed 21st in the 4x800m relay in 10:49.75.
Except for Higgins, the record-breaking season is now over for the Seahawks, and Scott said he looks forward to watching the team, who are largely underclassmen, grow.
“There were some tremendous athletes who were highly motivated, and they were a blast to come and work with at practice every day,” Scott said. “I'm really proud of what they were able to accomplish. They rewrote the school's record books time and time again and they're just really nice kids, too.”
