Harbor Theater announces Oscar contest

Mon, 03/29/2021 - 11:00am

Oscar season is here, and luckily this year we can see most films online that have been nominated for an Oscar. That’s good news, and also means we can try to predict what films we think will win the top awards at the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, April 25 at 8:30 p.m.

Enter the Harbor Theater Oscar Contest and pit yourself against the voting members of the Academy. Just go to www.boothbaycinema.org, print out the form, check off your choice for winner in each category and mail back to us postmarked before April 24. Then have fun watching the Awards ceremony and see how many you got right!

Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries. First prize gets four $10 tickets to Harbor Theater, Second prize gets three $10 tickets and third prize gets two tickets (all good from the day we re-open for one year).

David Fincher's “Mank”got top billing with 10 nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director, followed by “Judas And The Black Messiah” with six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (2), Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography. “Nomadland” also won big with Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography.

Last year Korean Director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” won Best Picture (also was up for Best International Film). This year “Minari,” with a Korean-American director and cast, is also at the top of the nomination list. “Minari” won nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Screenplay.

Other Best Picture nominees are: “The Father” (Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman both received nominations for acting), “Sound of Metal” (Riz Ahmed nominated for Best Actor), “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Best Supporting Actor nomination for Sacha Baron Cohen), and “Promising Woman” (Carey Mulligan nominated for Best Actress).

For the first time ever, two women were nominated for Best Director: Chloe Zhao for "Nomadland" and Emerald Fennell for 'Promising Woman."
